Don't credit Itch.io in your Steam build

So it took me a little longer than expected to get the windows build of my game's demo up on Steam. The reason is, well, I got an unexpected review failure...

Failure: Your build has failed our review because it contains a call to action to purchase products from a non-Steam website. The Credits mentions itch.io, and the Main Menu includes a link to itch.io.

Which I must admit was pretty unpleasant.

The Main Menu Link

Regardless of other matters, it just feels kind of monopolistic to me. Like, I imagine if YouTube forbid mentions of Patreon or sponsored videos and what that would do to the creators on that platform. Though I know other platforms like the Apple Store already have pretty intense TOS agreements so I suppose it isn't very surprising.

Compound that with the fact that we can't put discord banners up on our Steam page anymore and it gets a little rough to offer any options to your players.

The Credits

So I was annoyed that I had to remove the link from the main menu, but resigned to my fate in a world ruled by monopolistic corporations. I suppose Valve isn't as much of a good guy as I'd thought, but who's really surprised by that?  The credits on the other hand, I assumed that had to be a mistake.

The credits is providing credit to Itch the company (though they use part of their url for their company name, which is inconvenient here) for supporting and providing the resources I used. It is not a link to their site, and I do not have any resources on their site available.

But nope!

Links or mentions of itch.io are not allowed in-game. Please removed them as advised by the review team.
And this blew my mind!

I can't credit Itch, in general? Why? Is it because they have/are a store? But isn't that also true of Unity, who runs an asset store, or Unreal? Not to mention how many games are crediting people who are selling assets for games? Is that also a "Call to Action?"

Or is this an Itch.io specific ban?

So, long story short, be careful who you credit in the Steam build(s) of your game(s)! Because some of those credits might be "a call to action to purchase a product from a non-Steam website!"

PS: Thank you Itch for being less monopolistic about that stuff! I'm sorry I couldn't give you the credit you deserved in my little indie game.
